Livestock production promoted for food security and exports

The livestock sector plays an important role in supplying food, creating jobs, reducing poverty and promoting economic growth, an official says.

The Cambodia Livestock Raisers Association organised the 2026 summit on Monday, underlining its commitment to strengthening sustainable livestock production to supply the local market and reduce imports.

The event was presided over by Mong Reththy, Chairman of the Senate’s Agriculture Commission and a prominent agro-tycoon, along with leaders from relevant ministries, Srun Pov, president of the Cambodia Livestock Raisers Association, and the private sector.

Speaking at the summit in Phnom Penh, Pov emphasised that the livestock sector in Cambodia is gaining strong momentum, with animal production ensuring an adequate and regular supply.

“These results show that the livestock sector has truly contributed to ensuring food security, contributing to the national economy and sustainable development in Cambodia,” Pov said.

The livestock sector is crucial for the economic development and food security of the country. It plays an important role in supplying food, creating jobs, reducing poverty, and promoting national economic growth, he added.

Reththy expressed appreciation for the association, which has been actively involved for many years in contributing to the development of this sector through the sharing of knowledge, technology, and cooperation with national and international partners.

In the current global context facing war, climate change, supply chain disruptions, and rising food demand, the livestock sector plays a crucial role in ensuring food security, increasing citizen income, and national economic development, he stated.

He lauded the Royal Government for paying attention to the agricultural sector, especially the livestock sector. “The Royal Government always gives high priority to promoting domestic production, reducing imports, and enhancing competitiveness in international markets,” he said.

The summit is an important forum for discussion, sharing experiences, and setting future directions for the livestock sector in Cambodia, Reththy said.

The government places a high priority for the development of agriculture and animal husbandry, especially strengthening animal health and disease control, improving production quality, raising standards and food safety, and supporting all farmers and investors.

The animal feed market growth is estimated to surge in the coming years, influenced by various factors, such as rising meat consumption and the expansion of commercial livestock farming. The government is seeking private investors to boost domestic animal feed production and reduce import volumes.
