NBC marks 46th anniversary of the reintroduction of Khmer riel
The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) yesterday marked the 46th anniversary of the reintroduction of the Khmer Riel, emphasising the importance of promoting the national currency within the country’s economy and society.

The event, which covered the period from March 20, 1980, to March 20, 2026, was held at the Institute of Banking Studies. It was presided over by Cheang Vun, chairman of the National Assembly’s Committee on Economy, Finance, Banking and Auditing.
During the ceremony, NBC Deputy Governor Yim Leat presented key findings from two research studies conducted in collaboration with the National Assembly and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cambodia.
The research included a report titled “Dollarisation and Its Impact on Cambodia’s Garment, Footwear, Travel Goods and Bag Manufacturing Sector” and a survey on “Currency Usage in the Public Sector.”
The anniversary also featured a panel discussion on the progress, challenges, and policies related to promoting the riel. Participants included senior officials from the NBC, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce, the European Chamber of Commerce, and the Association of Banks in Cambodia.
The celebration aimed to raise public awareness of the Riel’s role in national sovereignty and to encourage its broader use. About 250 students attended the event alongside representatives from various ministries, public institutions, and development partners.
