Vietnam, Cambodia aim for $20 billion trade turnover

Vietnamese President Luong Cuong has reaffirmed Hanoi’s commitment to bolstering relations with Cambodia, identifying economic connectivity as a key driver for bilateral ties.

The president made the remarks yesterday while receiving the credentials of Cambodia’s newly appointed Ambassador to Vietnam, Touch Sopharath. During the meeting, Cuong expressed confidence that Ambassador Sopharath’s diplomatic experience would help promote “good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, and comprehensive cooperation” between the two nations.

Highlighting the historic bond, Cuong said that since establishing diplomatic relations on 24 June 1967, the two countries have united through struggles for national independence and modern development. He emphasised the importance of a recent state visit to Cambodia by Communist Party of Vietnam General Secretary To Lam, noting that Vietnam upholds a policy of prioritising its solidarity with Cambodia and Laos.

Cuong urged the ambassador to work closely with Vietnamese ministries to build political trust and improve defence and security cooperation. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a border of peace and stability.

“The two sides should step up comprehensive and sustainable economic connectivity,” Cuong said. He stressed the need to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, and supply chains, aiming to raise bilateral trade turnover to $20 billion.

For her part, Ambassador Sopharath congratulated Vietnam on its recent legislative elections held on March 15 and on its robust economic performance, with growth exceeding 8% in 2025. She said that the Vietnamese party chief’s February visit provided a vital foundation for future engagement.

The diplomat expressed gratitude for Vietnam’s historical support in overthrowing the Pol Pot genocidal regime and its ongoing assistance in national construction. Both parties concluded the meeting by pledging mutual support within regional and international forums to ensure long-term stability.
