Commerce ministry probes registration case linked to Japan report

The Ministry of Commerce has announced an internal investigation following a report published by The Japan Times concerning the amendment of the registration of a private company in Cambodia in 2021.

In a notice dated July 8, the Ministry said it had recently become aware of the July 7 report by the Japanese newspaper, which stated that the case is currently under investigation by the competent authorities in Japan.

The Ministry said it has opened its own internal investigation to identify any individuals who may have committed wrongdoing. Appropriate legal action will be taken in accordance with Cambodian law, while cooperation with the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) will be pursued if necessary.

The Ministry reiterated that business registration and related public services are conducted through the online platform, www.registrationservices.gov.kh, which was established to improve efficiency, simplify registration procedures, enhance transparency and integrity, and eliminate unofficial payments.

Businesses are encouraged to complete company registration and any subsequent amendments through the digital platform. They may also seek technical and procedural assistance from private service providers that have been trained and officially recognised by the Ministry.

The Ministry also highlighted the introduction of the public hotline 1266 to provide information and respond to inquiries related to its public services.

In addition, the Ministry noted that its public services have been integrated with the Cambodia Data Exchange (CamDX) platform in collaboration with relevant ministries and institutions to further improve the country’s business environment.

Most recently, the Ministry said it has continued simplifying procedures and expanding the use of digital technology, aiming to deliver 100 % of its public services online under Prakas No 044, dated May 26, on the second phase of business registration simplification.
