Garment and footwear exports climb to $1.4 billion in January

The garment, footwear, and travel goods (GFT) sector earned nearly $1.4 billion in export revenue in January, a 7.2% rise compared to the same period last year.

GFT exports reached $1,398 million in the first month of 2026, according to a Ministry of Commerce report released yesterday. The industry remains the nation’s largest foreign currency earner, accounting for 46.5% of total export value.

The report gave a detailed analysis of the sector’s performance:

• Garment exports amounted to $1,014 million in January, representing a 6.7% increase from the previous year.

• Footwear exports saw stronger growth of 16.8%, amounting to $196 million.

• Exports of travel goods and bags reached $188 million, a modest increase of 1.1%.

Key destinations for these products include the United States, the European Union, Canada, and Japan.

Data from the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training shows that the sector currently has more than 1,500 factories and branches. It employs over 900,000 workers, the majority of whom are women.
