China tech boosts Cambodia industrial sector modernisation

Chinese technology and manufacturing firms took centre stage at an international industrial exhibition in Cambodia’s capital, showcasing advanced automation and industrial machinery designed to accelerate the modernisation of the kingdom’s production sector.

The four-day expo, running from Thursday to Sunday, gathered more than 200 exhibitors, with Chinese enterprises heavily representing machinery, automation, textiles, plastics and printing sectors. Organised by Yorkers Trade & Marketing Service Co. alongside the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, the trade show aims to deepen bilateral industrial ties and expand commercial partnerships.

Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Hem Vanndy urged local enterprises during Thursday’s opening ceremony to integrate emerging tools—including artificial intelligence, robotics and smart manufacturing—to enhance productivity and strengthen market competitiveness.

“Cambodia cannot remain outside this transformation,” Vanndy said, stressing the necessity of adopting modern technology to lower operational costs and improve export quality.

Official data shows Cambodia hosts 3,357 operational factories employing over 1.35 million workers, more than 70% of whom are women. Total factory investment reached approximately $28 billion, marking a 29% year-on-year increase compared to 2025, while first-half industrial production surpassed $9.8 billion.

Exhibition staff member Chim Vinly noted that the annual event facilitates vital technology transfers, particularly for the garment sector. Bo Seyma, a mechanic representing Kosin Sewing Machine Co., reported robust local demand for advanced embroidery and automated sewing equipment supplied by Shanghai-based manufacturers.

Thong Mengdavid, deputy director at the China-ASEAN Studies Centre of the Cambodia University of Technology and Science, said bilateral cooperation has advanced beyond basic raw material trade into deep technological integration.

“Integrating China’s technology, machinery, and tools into Cambodian factories will address several challenges in the local economy, such as enhancing output per hour, reducing material waste caused by human error, and fostering skill development among the workforce,” Mengdavid said.
