Cambodia-China agro partnership sparks new export push
The strategic alliance integrates supply chains and research to boost Cambodia’s agricultural economy.

Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the Haikou Silk Road Academy Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen research cooperation, improve agricultural supply-chain resilience and expand investment in key areas of the agricultural sector.
The agreement was signed by Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ky Chanromdoul and Executive Director and Vice President of the Haikou Silk Road Academy Qiu Wenxu, in Phnom Penh.
The cooperation is expected to support Cambodia’s efforts to develop its agricultural sector through greater investment, research and the expansion of agricultural processing activities, with a particular focus on products that have strong market potential.
According to the MAFF, the MoU aims to increase investment in important agricultural subsectors by promoting research and experimentation, while also expanding the scale of processing for potential agricultural products.
This initiative drives local economic growth by strengthening agricultural value chains and transitioning Cambodia from a raw material exporter to a hub for high-value processed goods. By processing commodities locally before they reach domestic and international buyers, the plan will maximise revenue and open new doors for farmers, agro-processors, and trade networks.
A key objective of the cooperation is to increase exports of Cambodian agricultural products to the Chinese market. By strengthening research, processing capacity and supply-chain development, the two sides seek to create better opportunities for Cambodian agricultural products to meet market demand and generate greater economic returns.
The partnership also reflects the growing importance of research and innovation in improving the competitiveness of Cambodia’s agricultural sector. Research cooperation can help identify suitable agricultural products for further development, while experimentation and processing can contribute to improving the quality and market potential of products.
For Cambodian businesses, stronger agricultural processing and supply-chain development could create opportunities to move beyond the export of raw agricultural commodities and increase the share of processed products entering international markets.
China remains an important destination for Cambodian agricultural products, making efforts to improve production, processing and export capacity significant for the sector’s future growth. Greater cooperation between Cambodian institutions and Chinese organisations could also help connect agricultural development with investment and market opportunities.
The MoU therefore provides a framework for cooperation in research and investment aimed at developing Cambodia’s agricultural supply chains and increasing the competitiveness of its agricultural products.
Through expanded research, investment and processing activities, Cambodia aims to strengthen the resilience of its agricultural supply chains while creating more opportunities to increase the value of agricultural products and expand their presence in the Chinese market.
The cooperation is expected to contribute to the broader development of Cambodia’s agricultural sector by linking research and investment with processing and export opportunities, with the ultimate goal of generating mutual benefits for Cambodia and its partners.
