Cambodia secures Chinese market access for fresh jackfruit

Cambodia has officially secured market access for fresh jackfruit exports to China, marking a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s strategy to expand agricultural trade and strengthen ties with its largest partner.

The agreement was signed yesterday in Beijing by Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Dith Tina and Sun Meijun, Minister of the General Administration of Customs of China. According to a ministry statement, the two sides finalised key documents to deepen agricultural cooperation and facilitate bilateral trade.

The first is a Memorandum of Understanding on plant and animal quarantine, as well as the import and export of safe food products. The second is a Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Protocol that outlines the specific requirements for the export of fresh Cambodian jackfruit to China.

“The signing paves the way for Cambodian growers and exporters to access China’s vast consumer market, creating commercial opportunities for the fruit industry and supporting the government’s strategy to diversify agricultural exports,” the ministry said.

The agreement reflects Cambodia’s commitment to negotiating greater international market access while strengthening confidence in the quality and safety of its agricultural goods.

The SPS protocol establishes technical requirements covering the entire supply chain, including cultivation, harvesting, cleaning, processing, packaging and transportation. These measures ensure that exported jackfruit remains free from pests, diseases and chemical residues that could pose risks to human, animal or plant health.

The ministry urges producers and exporters to strengthen production management and comply strictly with China’s phytosanitary and food safety standards. Such adherence is essential to ensure successful trade and protect the reputation of Cambodian agricultural products in the Chinese market.

Officials said this breakthrough is a significant achievement for Cambodia’s farmers and private sector, opening export channels that contribute to higher agricultural value, increased rural incomes, and long-term growth in the country’s agribusiness sector.
