Fruit and vegetable exports hit $1 billion for second straight month

Việt Nam's fruit and vegetable exports are estimated to have reached nearly US$1.1 billion in August, marking the second consecutive month that monthly shipments topped $1 billion, customs data showed.

August exports rose 14.6 per cent from the same month last year, after reaching $1.07 billion in July. It was the first time the sector had recorded monthly exports of more than $1 billion in both July and August.

Fruit and vegetable exports totalled about $5.9 billion in the first eight months of this year, up nearly 22 per cent from a year earlier.

The growth was driven mainly by durian entering its peak harvest season in the Central Highlands, according to Đặng Phúc Nguyên, general secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT).

Nguyên said monthly exports surpassed $1 billion only once in 2025, reaching $1.25 billion in September.

He forecast that fruit and vegetable exports could remain above $1 billion a month for at least the next two months.

“With the current growth momentum, Việt Nam's fruit and vegetable exports are likely to reach $10 billion for the full year,” he said.

Despite the strong growth, Nguyên said the industry needed to address challenges related to product quality and food safety, as well as requirements for growing area codes, packing facility codes, and traceability, to sustain export growth and achieve the $10 billion target.
