Hun Sen seeks South Korea’s help to boost industrial cooperation
Senate President Hun Sen Monday sought Korea’s investment by establishing agricultural processing factories, electronics and machinery factories in Cambodia.
He made these remarks during a working meeting with a delegation led by Lee Chul-woo, Gyeongsangbuk-do provincial Governor at the Senate.
A statement posted on Mr Hun Sen’s social media stated that Gyeongsangbuk-do province and Siem Reap province have been co-organizing the Angkor Kyung Yu event for the past 18 years, which over the time has shown great progress in the relationship of strategic partnership and cooperation and achieving the Cambodia-Korea Free Trade Agreement and many other agreements today.
“[Samdech Techo] asked the provincial governor to help promote cooperation in the industry by attracting more investors to establish agricultural processing factories, electronics and machinery factories in Cambodia,” read the statement.
“Cambodia has a lot of raw materials with high quality, but lacks processing plants, which he believes that Korean investors should set up processing plants in Cambodia and export to the Korean market and also the world market.”
Mr Hun Sen also asked the Gyeongsangbuk-do provincial governor to help promote Cambodian culture and tourism to Koreans, so that more Korean tourists can visit Cambodia.
He said that he will visit Korea in September to attend the ‘World Knowledge Forum’ and also receive an honorary doctorate in ‘Leadership and Peacebuilding’ from Dongguk Wise University in Gyeongsangbuk-do province.
Governor Lee Chul-woo told Mr Hun Sen that Gyeongsangbuk-do province is the largest prefecture in Korea and has great potential in the fields of industry, agriculture and culture.
He said that although Korea is highly dependent on agro-industry, Korea is still concerned about food insecurity, which should be considered to boost agricultural productivity and processing.
Lee Chul-woo said if Korea and Cambodia promote cooperation in agricultural production and food processing then it benefits each other.
As for the tourism sector, Lee Chul-woo said that he would promote cultural and tourism cooperation as Korea and Cambodia have the same cultural and world heritage potential by promoting the construction of airports and connecting more flights to tourist destinations in Cambodia, which will help increase the number of international tourists.
“[He] is ready to cooperate with Cambodia in the energy industry, such as clean energy, hydrogen power and small nuclear power, which is currently in good standing in Gyeongsangbuk-do province.”
Later in the day, Lee Chul-woo paid a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Hun Manet at the Peace Palace and discussed matters pertaining to bilateral relations.
“Gyeongsangbuk-do province pledged to continue to strengthen and expand cooperation with relevant ministries and institutions of Cambodia. Gyeongsangbuk-do province is a large province of the Republic of Korea, which is famous for its culture and traditions as well as economic potential,” read the statement posted on Mr Hun Manet’s social media.
Mr Hun Manet and Lee Chul-woo also discussed ways and means to further strengthen and expand cooperation in the fields of investment, tourism and people-to-people connections, vocational training, health and shared successful experiences in implementing a new village project (Saemaul Undong) in Korea.
