CFC formed to promote cassava sector
The first Cassava Federation of Cambodia (CFC) was officially established Friday to promote the cassava sector in the world market.
The CFC was presided over by Var Rothsan, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Commerce (MoC). Over 120 participants including representatives of the relevant ministries such as from the Ministry Agriculture, Foresty and Fisheries (MAFF) and the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI), agricultural associations, cassava producers from 16 provinces and suppliers and partner organizations, including The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), Hilfswerk der Evangelischen Kirchen Schweiz (HEKS) and Cambodia Institute for Research and Rural Development (CIRD), took part in the ceremony.
Rothsan said that the CFC represents the private sector involved in the whole cassava price chain and it will act as a representative of cassava farmers and cassava traders.
The CFC was established in accordance with the policy of the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC), National Cassava Policy, which is one of the top institutions for the private sector and also partners with the government, ministries and departments in the development of the cassava sector.
“We sincerely hope that the CFC will promote the Cambodian cassava sector in the world market and get the recognition that Cambodia is a major source of cassava supply with quality, competitiveness and sustainability,” Rothsan added.
Oknha Chray Son, Chairman of Capital Food Investment Import Export company, who was elected as the President of the Cassava Federation of Cambodia (CFC), said that he was very happy to have complete support from cassava producers, collectors and other relevant parties.
Son committed to building a federation with a vision of promoting the planting techniques on the land area determined by the road map, which is a priority yield factor for the agricultural community.
“I want to see the smiles of the cassava farmers, who are the driving force behind the value chain of the cassava sector, which is the backbone of our Cambodian economy,” said Son.
CFC will collaborate with the development partners and organizations to expand and strengthen cultivation techniques, as well as strengthen production capacity with national and international standards for agricultural communities, especially the General Directorate of Agriculture of the MAFF.
He continued that the CFC will work closely with the Ministry of Commerce to develop a market plan for each target that Cambodia needs to capture and initiate a strategy to ensure the cost of cassava production.
According to the report of the MAFF, in the first semester of 2024, Cambodia exported more than 1.6 million tonnes, an increase of 385. 49 percent from 344,750 tonnes over the same period last year.
The MAFF added that the exporting of cassava starch also increased from 39,935 tonnes in the first half of 2024, up 104 percent from 19,500 tonnes over the same period last year, but the exporting of cassava decreased 8.86 percent.
