Cambodia draws nearly 3 million foreign tourists in first 5 months

The impressive surge reflects a significant rebound for a sector crucial to the Kingdom’s economy, demonstrating renewed global confidence in Cambodia as a safe and attractive destination.

Cambodia has welcomed almost three million foreign tourists in the first five months of this year, up 11.7 percent compared to the same period last year, according to a report from the Cambodian People’s Party.

The figures were mentioned in a speech delivered by Senate President and President of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) Hun Sen, at a grand meeting to commemorate the CPP’s 74th Founding Anniversary (June 28, 1951-2025), held in Phnom Penh, on Saturday.

“Cambodia received 2.95 million international tourists, an increase of 11.7 percent, while 13.16 million domestic tourists, an increase of 50 percent compared to the first five months of 2024,” he said.

This impressive surge reflects a significant rebound for a sector crucial to the Kingdom’s economy, demonstrating renewed global confidence in Cambodia as a safe and attractive destination, said Chhay Sivlin, President of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA).

“The increase in international arrivals is a testament to Cambodia’s peaceful and politically stable environment, which has significantly enhanced traveller confidence,” Sivlin told Khmer Times yesterday.

She emphasised the collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Tourism and the private sector in attracting visitors.

She acknowledged the Ministry’s proactive campaigns, particularly those targeting the Chinese market, which have included numerous delegations and engagements with tourism officials and influencers.

However, with border tension between Cambodia and Thailand, the sector would be partially impacted, she said, placing her hope for a peaceful resolution to the border issues, which have already led to disruptions in cross-border travel.

Tourism remains one of Cambodia’s four main economic pillars, alongside garment exports, agriculture, and real estate and construction.

The Ministry of Tourism has set an ambitious target of 7.5 million international tourists in 2025.

The ongoing “Green Season” campaign, designed the Ministry of Tourism to promote Cambodia’s natural beauty and cultural richness during the rainy months, is also expected to contribute to year-round tourism growth.
