PM urges brewery to use more local materials

Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong has called for Carlsberg, the joint venture partner with the Lao Brewery Company (LBC), to explore ways to increase production capacity and improve the quality of Beerlao products.

At the same time, the use of more raw materials in the production process, especially the superior khao kai noi rice, must be promoted to generate income for local farmers and reduce the import of raw materials from other countries.

The statement was made yesterday during a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong by a delegation of the Carlsberg Group, led by its Chairman, Prof. Dr Flemming Besenbacher.

Mr Thongsing told the delegation the joint venture between LBC and Carlsberg has been outstanding and the company contributes US$200 million annually to the government's coffers.

“Laos is preparing for the Asean Economic Community at the end of this year, which will be a good opportunity for Lao products. But there will also be challenges in terms of seeking regional and international markets,” he said.

He noted that Carlsberg had played a key role in improving the quality of Beerlao products in the past and these improvements should continue.

Prof. Dr Flemming Besenbacher said the company's management board was seeking ways to build more factories in Laos to increase job recruitment among local residents.

“We also have discussed with the LBC management board a better system for waste management, as well as the company's responsibility to society,” he said.

He added that training sessions on the foolishness of drinking and driving should be given to target young people because it is mostly young drivers that are involved in road accidents.

Since 2002, the Lao government and Carlsberg have held a joint share in LBC through their business partnership.
