First Vientiane Expo may need 800 booths

The organising committee for the first Vientiane Expo may have to increase the number of booths available because of the high level of response received from businesses in Laos and other countries in the region.

The committee had expected that about 600 booths would be required with 400 to be allocated to companies in Laos and the rest to other countries. Now it appears that more than 800 booths will be needed to satisfy the requests that have poured in.

Handicrafts, consumer goods and electronic devices will be on sale at the expo and the organisers expect to see more than 100,000 visitors during the event.

Office Head of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and secretary of the Vientiane Expo 2015, Mr Somvang Inthavong, spoke at a press conference in Vientiane yesterday giving details and information on preparations for this first Vientiane Expo.

“With China wanting 100 booths, India and Thailand wanting 50 each and other Asean countries wanting some it seems certain that we will have to expand to at least 880 booths in total,” he said.

The first Vientiane Expo will showcase outstanding national and regional products, along with marking the 40th anniversary of the Lao PDR.

The event will also feature local products that play significant roles in the socio-economic development of Laos.

Mr Somvang explained that it will also be a platform for local and regional businesses to network and engage in business-matching activities.

There will be a special highlight in addition to the featuring of a wide range of Lao products and some goods from neighbouring countries. This will be the presentation of certificates of congratulation to businesspeople who have been contributing to the development of Laos over the past four decades.

According to the organising committee, foodstuffs, agricultural products, wooden furniture, interior décor items, gems and jewellery will also be on display.

The expo will be held at Lao-ITECC in Vientiane from November 28 to December 7 to promote Laos' top business units and imported products.
