Leaders seal bilateral pact to expand trade and stability

Cambodia and Vietnam have pledged to deepen bilateral ties, focusing on trade expansion, regional stability, and parliamentary diplomacy during a high-level diplomatic exchange in Hanoi.

National Assembly President Khuon Sudary met with General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President To Lam yesterday during an official and friendship visit, underscoring a shared commitment to long-term stability and good neighbourliness.

To Lam welcomed the delegation, lauding Cambodia’s ongoing progress under the Cambodian People’s Party. He highlighted potential growth in commercial sectors, suggesting that expanded trade could be bolstered by increased Vietnamese imports of Cambodian agricultural goods, such as rice and cashew nuts, alongside new investments in domestic processing facilities.

The Vietnamese leader also referenced earlier discussions with Senate President Hun Sen regarding regional connectivity, which include plans for a proposed expressway linking Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City. Both nations aim to transform their shared border into a zone of enduring peace and prosperity while coordinating closely to safeguard regional stability within ASEAN.

In response, Sudary congratulated To Lam on his re-election for the 2026–2031 term and commended Vietnam’s economic growth and governance reforms. Briefing her host on productive talks with Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, she noted that both legislative bodies agreed to update their existing memorandum of understanding to better align with current economic realities.

Emphasising the evolving role of parliamentary diplomacy, Sudary stated that legislative cooperation effectively complements state and party efforts by fostering inclusive dialogue and tackling complex geopolitical challenges. She reaffirmed Cambodia’s dedication to multilateralism, international law, and the UN Charter to promote global peace and mutual development.

The talks concluded with both sides reaffirming their resolve to leverage legislative and executive channels to drive sustainable economic growth, enhance cross-border cooperation, and secure lasting prosperity for both populations.
