Cambodia earns $1.4 bilion from rice exports in 8 months

The Kingdom ships 472,803 tonnes of milled rice to 66 destinations worldwide.

Cambodia has earned a total of $1,462 million from paddy rice and milled rice exports in the first eight months of this year, a report from the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF) showed on Tuesday.

From January to August of this year, the Kingdom shipped a total of 472,803 tonnes of milled rice to 66 destinations worldwide, up 14.7 percent from 412,023 tonnes in the same period last year.

The commodity exported earned the country $348 million in revenue, a year-on-year increase of 14 percent from $305 million recorded in the same period last year, stated the report.

Exported milled rice varieties included fragrant rice, long grain white rice, parboiled rice, and organic rice, it said, citing that fragrant rice accounted for 87 percent of total rice export.

Breaking down, the Kingdom exported 226,910 tonnes of milled rice to EU countries, accounting for 47.9 percent of the total export amount, earning $176 million in revenue.

The country exported 116,320 tonnes of the commodity to China and its autonomous regions, earning $68 million.

Other markets, including seven countries in ASEAN and 32 countries in African and Middle East regions, imported 62,158 tonnes and 67,411 tonnes of the commodity, respectively, according to the report.

The CRF newly-elected President Lay Chhun Hour, said the positive figures of increasing rice exports showed the high yield of rice production and increasing demand for Cambodian rice in the markets.

“The significant growth in both volume and value demonstrates the effectiveness of our efforts to enhance our brand reputation and expand our reach,” Chhun Hour told Khmer Times.

Meanwhile, Cambodia generated some $1,114 million in revenue from border-traded paddy rice export of 4.84million tonnes to neighbouring countries during the eight-month period.

The CRF representative emphasized the importance of collaboration with the government to achieve these goals, he said.

“CRF is maintaining the existing markets and exploring new markets for rice exports, so that we are on the track to achieve the target of one-million-tonne export,” Chhun Hour added.

Cambodia has been actively working to boost its agricultural exports, with rice being a cornerstone of its economy.

The government has shown a strong commitment to the rice sector through financial support, infrastructure development, and policies aimed at reducing production costs for farmers.

To support the rice production sector, the government has also encouraged relevant parties, both government and private sector, to further strengthen its collaboration with relevant ministries and institutions to boost direct exports to international markets.
