Army will have final say on reopening border with Cambodia, Thai PM says

Thai PM Anutin Charnvirakul categorically said that the Royal Thai Army (RTA) will have the final say on reopening the border with Cambodia, a move that is likely to prolong economic uncertainty between the two countries.

During a campaign visit to Si Sa Ket province on September 20, Anutin stressed that the Royal Thai Government (RTG) under his leadership would not engage in negotiations while Cambodian actions continue to provoke Thai troops.

The extended closure has already strained small businesses, disrupted supply chains, and reduced tourist flows in border provinces, with losses mounting for traders dependent on daily cross-border activity.

Economists warned that prolonged restrictions could weaken investor sentiment and stall regional economic growth.

With the military relying on force rather than dialogue, business leaders fear a quick reopening is unlikely, leaving thousands of livelihoods in limbo.
