MAFF makes move at raising income of farmers, consumers
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two partners, Cambodian Green (CG) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Cambodia, to increase the income of both farmers and consumers and to raise awareness of natural resource conservation.
The signing ceremony was presided over by Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, on Wednesday at the Ministry with participation from various partner organisations, the private sector and relevant officials.
During the ceremony, Tina expressed his support for the national and international partners, as well as the private sector, in their collective commitment to share resources aimed at promoting Cambodia’s agricultural sector and successfully implementing natural resource conservation efforts.
According to a statement from MAFF, Tina emphasized that the signing of the MoU with the Cambodian Green (CG) company is a crucial step in stabilizing rice prices in the northwest of the country. This initiative aims to reduce costs and increase the income for both farmers and consumers.
“The Ministry of Agriculture needs partners with clear common goals, effective techniques, and a willingness to collaborate for successful outcomes,” the press release stated. The Minister took the opportunity to encourage proactive implementation of the MoU, emphasizing the importance of achieving practical results, addressing challenges together, and fostering mutual success.
He added that the signing of this MoU marks an essential step forward in their collaboration with WWF-Cambodia.
“Together, we have already achieved significant milestones, including the successful conservation of Cambodia’s iconic dolphins, and this MoU strengthens our commitment to further advancing conservation and sustainable development. We will continue to expand our efforts to protect natural resources and ensure a sustainable future for the communities that depend on them,” he emphasised.
Regarding the conservation of natural resources, the Minister expressed his satisfaction with the steady increase in the dolphin population, a valuable asset for Cambodia. In 2023 and 2024, the Ministry has collaborated with WWF and other partners on effective patrols and crime suppression, marking a significant achievement for the Ministry of Agriculture.
In addition, he also commended the joint efforts of partner organizations and sub-national authorities, particularly the local communities, in raising awareness about natural resource conservation.
At the same time, Tina also mentioned the modern farming community that uses clear seeds and techniques, has the capital to invest, has a real market and promotes the fragrant rice, which is a Cambodian rice variety to have more potential to export to the international market.
The WWF released a press release on Wednesday to say that WWF-Cambodia and the Ministry of Agriculture took a historic leap forward, in their efforts to preserve Cambodia’s natural environment.
The two parties signed MoU, outlining their plans to work together on conservation and development initiatives for the next five years.
WWF-Cambodia’s Country Director Arun Muttreja said that the MoU represented more than a formalised agreement.
“It is a shared vision for the future of Cambodia’s northeast region,” he said. “It represents our commitment to the people of Cambodia, to the protection of their natural heritage, and to the promotion of sustainable, equitable development.”
