Almost 100% of tax now collected electronically
The General Department of Taxation (GDT) has attributed the significant growth in tax revenue collection since 2014 to the implementation of technology solutions.
Almost 100 percent of tax revenue is now collected electronically, said Kong Vibol, GDT’s Director General, recently.
Tax revenue has played an important role over the past 10 years due to the GDT’s many reforms, especially in the modernization of information technology systems that provide convenience to taxpayers with transparency and efficiency, Vibol said in an interview posted by the CamDX on Wednesday.
“Currently, GDT has 79 tax collection management programmes and apps, so the tax revenue is almost 100 percent collected electronically,” Vibol said.
The technology advancement in the taxation sector began in 2014 when the GDT started to strengthen the online registration system and a tax revenue management system such as E-Filing, GDT Tax Prefiling app, and E-Payment etc.
“Since 2014, Cambodia has witnessed a remarkable increase in tax revenue collection. The GDT credits this achievement to the strategic adoption of technology, which has streamlined processes, enhanced efficiency, and improved transparency within the tax administration system,” he added.
Recognizing the transformative potential of technology, the GDT is now actively pursuing the development and implementation of a big data-driven tax system, Vibol said.
“We are working to establish a big data-driven tax system to keep up with the same progress of tax administrations in the region,” he said.
The country has two institutions responsible for collecting taxes, namely the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE), which collects taxes on goods entering and leaving the country, and the General Department of Taxation (GDT), which focuses on interior taxes such as income tax, salary tax, value added tax and property tax. Both come under the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
GDT collected some $1.71 billion in tax revenue, representing 48 percent of the target set for 2024 in the first half of this year.
In 2023, the General Department of Taxation collected $3.6 billion in tax revenue, 101.13 percent of the 2023 plan.
