The first batch of Japanese Unshu tangerines arrive to AEON Vietnam

In the morning of December 3, the press conference titled “Lift the import ban – Start selling Japanese Unshu Mikan tangerines” was successfully held at AEON Mall Long Bien. AEON supermarket is the first retail system in Vietnam to introduce to Vietnamese customers more than 1 tonne of fresh Unshu tangerines imported from Japan.

The first Unshu tangerines from Japan are now on the shelves of AEON Supermarkets nationwide. The press conference was attended by Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Okabe Daisuke, deputy director of the Plant Protection Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Quy Duong, and director of Jetro Hanoi Representative Office Keisuke Kobayashi, as well as representatives from AEON Vietnam.

Nguyen Quy Duong, deputy director of Plant Protection Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shared: “Bringing Unshu tangerines to Vietnam is the result of the efforts of the governments, organisations as well as businesses, demonstrating the close relationship between the two countries and the development of Vietnam’s economy.”

Japanese Unshu tangerines are seedless with thin skin and brilliant yellow colour. In October 2021, the ban on the import of Japan’s Unshu Mikan tangerine was lifted.

From mid-November, AEON Vietnam coordinated with suppliers to quickly bring this specialty fruit to domestic consumers. On November 23, during his official visit to Japan, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, former Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide and Chairman of the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentary Alliance Nikai Toshihiro also attended the ceremony to export the first batch of Unshu tangerines from Japan to Vietnam.

“So far, Vietnam has imported apples, pears, and Unshu tangerines from Japan. We hope to continue promoting the import and export in each of the markets of specialty fruits such as muscat grape of Japan, longan and pomelo of Vietnam in the near future,” Okabe Daisuke, Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam said.

On December 1, the first 1 tonne of Unshu tangerines arrived in Vietnam and was sold at the AEON department store and supermarket system nationwide. Nishikawa Satoshi, North Area representative, AEON Vietnam, shared: “We hope that in the coming time, restrictions on import and export of products between Vietnam and Japan, especially for fruits and typical agricultural products of the two countries, will be gradually eased and removed so that consumers in the two countries will have the opportunity to enjoy more new specialities.”

The representative of AEON Vietnam also said that in the first days of opening for sale, Unshu tangerines received attention and love from many Vietnamese customers. The firm will continue to promote connections to introduce more products to meet the needs of Vietnamese customers.
