Makers recall cars with defects in Vietnam

Car manufacturers, including Toyota, Ford and Mercedes-Benz, have recently issued major recalls due to defects in airbags, steering wheels and brake hoses, the local media reported.

Toyota Vietnam has announced its third expanded recall program to check and replace the airbag inflator modules of the front passenger airbags on Toyota Vios cars manufactured between January 2 and 25, 2014.

A source from Japan’s Toyota Motor Corporation said that 101 Vios cars with model code NCP93L-BEMRKU and 100 others under the code NCP93L-BEPGKU in Vietnam will be recalled through this program, which is expected to wrap up on June 26, 2022.

According to Toyota, the reason for the recall is that the inflators of the front airbags supplied by Takata might have been made in a way that allows moisture to intrude over time.

Toyota Vietnam will check and replace the affected airbag inflators on Vios cars at no charge. Checking and replacing the inflator module will take roughly one to four and a half hours depending on the model.

Similarly, Ford Vietnam plans to recall more than 25,280 Ford Ranger pickups to check and replace the brake hoses. The cars with defective brake hoses were manufactured between March 1, 2016, and April 16, 2018, and were imported from Thailand. In May, the carmaker recalled some 10,000 defective automobiles in Vietnam.

Ford Vietnam’s recall will last 10 years, from June 25, 2019 to June 25, 2029. It will take roughly three hours to check the vehicle and repair the defect.

Mercedes-Benz has announced the recall of some 1,700 C200, C250, C300, E250 and E300 vehicles locally assembled between June 2016 and November 2017 due to a fault in the steering wheels.

The recall program was launched when Daimler AG, the owner of the Mercedes-Benz brand, discovered the defect, which caused the steering wheel to tighten excessively.

Its recall campaign will run from July 25 to December 31, 2022, at Mercedes-Benz dealerships nationwide. Checking and replacing the steering wheels will take roughly four and a half hours.
