Laos to promote green industry
Lao development may be headed for a low-carbon future under a new project proposed at a meeting yesterday in Vientiane.
The Mi nistry of Industry and Commerce and its international development partners yesterday discussed a national action plan and possible policies for the promotion of sustainable products in L aos.
The aim of the meeting was to pave the way for a Green Industry for Low Carbon Development project, to be run by the Clean Production Centre under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
Ministry Industry and Handicraft Department Director General, Mr Manohak Rasachack, said the government wanted to launch a green industry project with the help of the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
“The project is aimed at enabling technology cooperation and investment in advanced technologies in industries that reduce emissions of greenhouse gasses and improve productivity,” he said.
Mr Manohak said Laos had ratified several multilateral agreements on the reduction of carbon emissions and had policies and strategies in place to reduce emissions.
“To implement these plans, Laos needs technical support and experience from developed countries and the Japanese government has provided support through UNIDO,” he said.
Mr Manohak, who is also the Clean Production Centre Chairman, said workshop participants had brainstormed on draft policies and strategies that would be key to the Industry for Low Carbon Development project's success.
The workshop featured presentations from Embas sy of Japan to Laos Second Secretary, Ms Tomomi Fujisawa, UNIDO Project Manager, Mr Rene Van Berkel, UNIDO Chief Technical Advisor, Dr Permod Gupta, and other local and international experts.
