Korean experts to help energy management
Electricite Du Laos (EDL) employees will be better able to manage the power supplier's electrical systems after a course kicked off yesterday with experts from the Republic of Kor ea.
The course, which winds up tomorrow, focuses on using new technology and techniques to increase capacity in electrical systems.
Supported by the Korean government through the Korean Business Centre in Vientiane, the course offers the expertise of senior managers of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) to 25 EDL employees.
EDL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Sisavath Thiravong, said the company was currently undergoing rapid growth in its capacity and organisational structure.
“We all came to realise that we needed more advanced knowledge and technology in the electrical field in order to keep up with such growth,” he said.
Mr Sisavath said he hoped the Korean government would continue to offer its support to EDL.
The course's opening ceremony was attended Ambassador of th e Republic of Korea to Laos, Mr Kim Soo-Gwon, Korean Business Centre Director General, Mr Ahn Yoo Seok, and company officials.
EDL has continued to successfully manage its business through a period of high growth despite financial pressure on the country. Improvements have been made in bill collection from customers.
However the company's energy losses reached 10.32 percent in 2012, up 0.18 percent on the previous year. Domestic energy consumption sat at 2,874 million kWh, 4 percent higher than the planned level for the year.
Hydropower plants owned by EDL have opened throughout Laos and several more are under construction.
Despite its potential for electricity production, Laos still imports some power from neighbouring countries for domestic and industrial use.
