World Bank strengthens project delivery in Cambodia

Cambodian and Lao officials involved in World Bank-financed development projects have joined a three-day training program aimed at strengthening project implementation capacity, improving operational readiness and supporting better development results.

“The World Bank hosted the ‘CAMBODIA/LAOS Client Operational Capacity Learning Program’ at the Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh on September 15–17 to strengthen regional project implementation capacity.

The program brought together Project Implementation Units (PIUs) under World Bank-financed projects of the Ministry of Rural Development, officials from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and representatives of World Bank-financed projects in Cambodia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

The training focused on strengthening the capacity of PIUs and relevant government officials in key areas of project preparation and implementation. It also aimed to improve project performance, enhance implementation readiness, promote peer learning and facilitate knowledge exchange.

During the three-day program, participants gained practical knowledge and insights from resource persons with extensive international experience. Cambodian and Lao participants also shared experiences and lessons learned from implementing development projects.

Key areas covered included financial management, procurement, and environmental and social safeguards, with discussions designed to help participants address operational challenges and improve project implementation.

The World Bank said the knowledge-sharing activities are expected to contribute to more efficient and effective implementation of World Bank-financed projects in both countries, while strengthening cooperation and peer learning among project officials.
