Cambodia’s electric shift gains momentum as fuel prices climb
Cambodia is witnessing a dramatic acceleration in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with registrations reaching record highs in March as motorists flee soaring traditional fuel costs.

Official data released yesterday by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport shows that the kingdom has registered 11,656 electric vehicles from 2021 to March 2026. This total includes 3,832 electric motorcycles and 722 electric three-wheelers.
Spokesman Phan Rim said there was a “significant rise” in momentum, with 1,676 units registered in March alone. He attributed the pivot to rising petrol and diesel costs, driven by global oil price volatility linked to instability in the Middle East.
With diesel currently priced at 5,700 riels (about $1.42) per litre, the economic case for electrification is strengthening. Beyond fuel savings, officials are emphasising the environmental benefits of zero-emissions transport as the nation seeks to modernise its infrastructure and reduce its carbon footprint.
