HCMC suggests opportunities to cooperate with Chinese province
The government of HCMC has sought to tighten cooperation with the Chinese province of Yunnan for mutual development, especially in the three fields of tourism, education, and trade.
The municipal chairman, Nguyen Thanh Phong, hosted a reception for the Chinese provincial governor, Ruan Chengfa, on May 31 in the city, where they discussed bilateral cooperation opportunities.
Speaking at the reception, Phong said Vietnam highly appreciates the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperative ties between the country and China in past years. The city itself has established cooperation with eight Chinese localities, including Yunnan.
The city, during its development, has faced multiple obstacles related to traffic infrastructure, the environment and many other issues. Accordingly, the city’s chairman expected to establish cooperation with Yunnan to address existing issues, alongside the three fields.
Ruan Chengfa, for his part, said Yunnan has collaborated with Vietnam’s northern provinces in the fields of healthcare, education, and tourism in recent years, and reaped many positive results. He hoped that further cooperation with HCMC will generate significant results.
Last year, Yunan saw its gross domestic product (GDP) exceeding US$260 billion, up 8.9% year-on-year. With this growth rate, Yunnan reached third place in growth in China. The province boasts robust growth in technology solutions, with the tourism sector gaining impressive results.
The governor of Yunnan said the provincial authorities will call upon quality firms to promote cooperation between the two countries, as well as pledged to evaluate the HCMC chairman’s suggestion.
Regarding HCMC, it has long served as the southern financial hub, attracting some 40% of major foreign-invested projects into the country. The city contributes nearly 20% to the nation’s GDP and some 28% to the State budget.
