More Lao products on sale at high-end malls

More Lao products are now being selected for sale on the shelves of various well known regional supermarkets in Vientiane, bringing them to the attention of domestic and foreign consumers as Laos enters the first year of the Asean Community.

Some processed fruits, coffee products , vegetables and other items can be seen at several high profile supermarkets in Vientiane.

A representative of View Mall, Dr Narong Tananuwat, told Vientiane Times last week that Laos is now opening its windows wider to foreign visitors and the presence of larger shopping centres is a good opportunity to promote local goods.

“ViewMall, one of the newest shopping malls in Vientiane, will respond to visitors' requirements for better retail outlets. They can find everything they want on sale here,” he said.

With the launch of the Asean Community this year, Laos is expecting a large number of foreign visito rs to come to Laos for holidays or to do business.

“We hope tha t ViewMall will be the right answer for foreign visitors looking to buy high quality Lao products. All of the goods displayed here have to undergo quality control checks by our staffers,” he said.

Several shopping malls are now under construction in Vientiane due to the rapid growth of Laos' economy over the past decade, giving shoppers more options.

Many kinds of Lao products are now on display at groceries and supermarkets in Vientiane. Some of them are made by Lao Farmers' Products, a group that also exports to various European countries.

Dr Narong added that some items from the provinces are also on sale at ViewMall, including dried riverweed and sausages from Luang Prabang.

Despite the fact that Laos is still heavily dependent on imported goods, it's clear that more and more high quality local products are making an increasing appearance at local supermarkets and gaining wider recognition and acceptance.
