Lach Huyen boosts transport network
The soon-to-be-complete Lach Huyen international port and Tan Vu-Lach Huyen highway will provide the Dinh Vu industrial zone in the northern port city of Haiphong with a unique advantage in transport infrastructure, making the park an ideal destination for both domestic and foreign investors.
The Lach Huyen international port and Tan Vu-Lach Huyen highway are expected to be basically completed by the end of 2017, and create a complete connection in transport infrastructure, both on sea and land, for Dinh Vu Industrial Zone (IZ).
Lach Huyen, the biggest international port ever built in the north of Vietnam, has the total investment capital of VND25 trillion ($1.17 billion). Component A of the Lach Huyen international port project, begun in April 2013 with the investment capital of VND18.6 trillion ($873 million), consists of main project parts in the Cat Hai island area, namely the building of a one-way route for ships, with the width of 160 metres and depth of 14m, a turning area with diameter of 660m, a 3,220m-long sea dike, and a sand dike of 7,600m. It is able to accommodate ships of between 50,000-100,000 DWT.
“The site clearance is almost done, and building and installation packages are moving at an acceptable pace,” said Tran Anh, director of the Maritime Project Management Unit under the Ministry of Transport.
By the end of 2017, the most important segments of part A are going to be completed and will start operation. Meanwhile, construction on the Tan Vu-Lach Huyen highway, with the investment capital of VND11.85 trillion ($556 million), will be finished in May 2017. The Tan Vu-Lach Huyen highway, whose construction started in February 2014, has one end at the Tan Vu crossroad in Hai An district of Haiphong, and one end at the gate of the Lach Huyen port. It is 15.63 kilometres long, of which the Tan Vu sea-crossing bridge is 5.44km long, with six lanes and width of 29.5m. After completion, the Tan Vu sea-crossing bridge will be Southeast Asia’s longest sea-crossing bridge.
The Tan Vu-Lach Huyen highway is the only land route linking directly to the Lach Huyen port that is being built. The transport system in the area, which consists of the Hanoi-Haiphong expressway, the National Highway 5, the Hanoi-Haiphong railway, and the Cat Bi international airport will help investors reduce time and maximise profits.
Through the Lach Huyen port, the north of Vietnam is connected to Europe and the Americas, and the country’s exports and imports will not have to transit at ports in Singapore or Hong Kong. This will reduce the cost of transport, raise the competitiveness of Vietnam’s goods, and thus make Haiphong an ideal destination for both domestic and foreign investors.
The Dinh Vu Industrial Zone, located in Dong Hai commune in Hai An district, is the closest to the Lach Huyen port and is the only IZ directly linked to the Tan Vu-Lach Huyen highway. Many logistics companies, such as Yusen, Nippon Express, MOL, and SITC have set up business in the zone. Dinh Vu Industrial Zone JSC, the company managing Dinh Vu IZ, has plans to expand the area of the IZ by another 650 hectares to the south of the Dinh Vu peninsula, other 500ha on the Cat Hai island right next to the Lach Huyen port, and 500ha in the Dam Nha Mac area in Quang Yen commune in Quang Ninh province. Eventually the IZ will have the total area of 2,000ha and lie between a port, an airport, and an expressway.
