N&V to develop modern livestock farm in Vientiane
The N&V Farm expects to invest about US$20 million to invest in establishing a model livestock farm in Naxaithong district, Vientiane.
The farm will focus on raising cattle and goats, the farm's Director, Mr Phouphengsavanh Kongvongxay told local media recently.
Currently, the farm has undertaken 70 percent of land clearance and basic infrastructure is completed after it was commenced last year, he said.
The farm covers about 75 hectares in the area of Sisavad village of the district, which is about eight kilometres from Road No 13 North.
At the end of this year, the farm will put 500 cattle out to pasture, followed by goats, said Mr Phouphengsavanh.
“We will also develop this farm to become a study tour site where farmers and livestock breeders can come to learn,” he said.
He expected that the farm will be selling and export its products in the next five years, with its foreign market focus on China and Vietnam.
District authorities always open the green light for domestic and foreign investment, especially in the agriculture sector, said district Deputy Governor, Mr Phouvieng Phiathep.
In previous years, the district has tried to encourage and promote business entrepreneurs through the improvement of regulations and providing good policies for them.
He assured that after this farm is completed, it will become the first model in the district to contribute to socio-economic development, increase incomes and create job opportunities for local people.
The farm will also to produce meat for market supply in the district as well as around Vientiane.
Beef demand in Laos is currently still high due to the increasing population and economic expansion for development.
The price of beef is also high as there is a lack of market supply, Mr Phouveing commented.
To supply sufficient meat for consumption and produce on a commercial basis, the district authorities will try to encourage more business entrepreneurs to invest in the agriculture sector, especially livestock breeding.
The district composes about 214 livestock farms, including cattle, goats and pigs, he reported.
Combined, the farms can supply around 14,890 tonnes of meat a year, at an average weight per beast of 202 killogrammes, some of which is sold in local markets.
However, there are still many local farmers breeding livestock, especially cattle, by traditional methods. Large numbers of cattle are exported, particularly to Vietnam, where the prices they fetch are higher.
