Lao Telecom receives ISO/IEC 27001:2013
The Lao Telecommunications Company (LTC) has been awarded the International Organisation for Standardisation Certification (ISO/IEC 27001:2013) for information security management standards, following an inspection by the Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS).
The certificate was presented to LTC Director General Mr Thongsay Sanexaya on Tuesday by the General Manager of SGS Thailand Mr Montree Tangtermsirikul.
Attending the event were Deputy Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Mr Thansamay Kommasith and the board and management of Lao Telecom.
In the modern world information has become a key factor in general living and business operation but the threat from the internet and other online networks is becoming more challenging for information security.
Therefore, LTC needed to bring its information management system up to international standards in order to build confidence and ensure that information as well as the information technology system of the company and individual customers will be maintained, used and kept safe, Mr Thongsay said.
In addition to this it is to ensure our readiness for the upcoming Asean Economic Community at the end of this year, he added.
LTC has strived to achieve ISO/IEC 27001:2013 for information security management standard since October 2014.
Today, we are proud to receive this certificate which has meant that our company has become the first telecom company in Laos to achieve this international standard, he said.
More important than this success, it certified that the company pays attention to protecting information, keeping it safe , secret and ready to use at all times.
In addition to this it will build confidence in users of our services that the company's system will be able to cope with the situation, and recover any lost information, should there be a system failure caused by a natural disaster.
Mr Thongsay said LTC sets targets to develop the system in three periods; in 2015 we will begin to develop a monitoring system for the network operation centre; in 2016 we will strive to cover all technical sections and in 2017 we will continue to develop ISO/IEC 27001:2013 to cover all sections of the company.
So far, the company has invested a large amount of money in service improvements and telecom network expansion, including the mobile phone system, transmission lines, landline phones, and internet and other services.
This year, LTC plans to earn an income of 1,400 billion kip from its services and expects to earn a net profit of 227 billion kip, an increase of 10.4 percent compared to last year.
