Sepon achieves copper production record
MMG LXML Sepon (LXML), which operates the Sepon mine in Savannakhet province, produced 23,316 tonnes of copper cathode in the second quarter of 2015.
The production record, coupled with adjustments to the plant, highlights the company's ability to transition to harder Type II ores at the mine, according to MMG LXML Sepon.
LXML produced a record 44,632 tonnes of copper in the first half of 2015. Actual C1 costs in the first half of 2015 were US$1.07/lb, below guidance of US$1.10–US$1.20/lb. LXML expects to produce 80,000-87,000 tonnes of copper cathode at Sepon in 2015, within market guidance, at a C1 cost of US$1.10–US$1.20/lb.
LXML is reviewing options to optimise production in light of declining ore grades and changing ore characteristics. A targeted exploration programme is continuing in areas adjacent to the mine.
Another highlight for LXML Sepon in the first half of 2015 was the Lao government announcement that Vilabouly district, where the Sepon mine is located, has graduated from the 46 poorest districts in the Lao PDR. Household surveys confirm incomes in Vilabouly have increased tenfold since 2002.
LXML supports community projects in 42 villages, benefitting more than 14,000 people, on local business development, roads, fish ponds, and access to potable water supply.
MMG Limited released its June quarter 2015 production results today, reporting higher copper cathode production and solid progress at Las Bambas. Total first half copper cathode production of 83,727 tonnes was up 10 percent on the corresponding quarter in 2014.
MMG Chief Executive Officer, Mr Andrew Michelmore said, “Our focus on efficiency continues to deliver strong results. Sepon has achieved record production despite harder ore types.” MMG production guidance has increased by 3,000 tonnes. MMG expects to produce 171,000 – 186,000 tonnes of copper in 2015.
“At MMG, we mine to create wealth for our people, host communities, and shareholders. We are very proud of our contribution to socio-economic development in the Lao PDR,” General Manager, MMG LXML Sepon, Mr Suresh Vadnagra said.
“LXML is committed to working in close partnership with the Lao Government to focus on training and development to enhance livelihoods in communities near the mine.”
