Taiwan company to build garment factory in Vientiane province

A company from Taiwan will invest over 25 billion kip (US$3.2 million) to build a garment factory in Vientiane province to produce clothing and textile products for export.

A contract for the land and building acquisition was recently signed in the province between the relevant departments in the province and the company.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by provincial Deputy Governor Ms Singkham Khongsavanh.

According to the contract, Hakers Enterprise Co., Ltd. will rent the land and an old building in Phonmy village, Viengkham district from the government for a period of 50 years.

Company President Mr Richard Cheng told local media that they would begin to redevelop the factory site, build some additional buildings and clear the land for expansion.

They will also install the necessary equipment and all the works are expected to be complete within one year.

The total works to be carried out will cost over 25 billion kip (US$3.2 million) to get the factory ready to go into production.

Initial production will focus on clothing for export only but, if there are more favourable conditions in the future, the company will produce clothing items for domestic sale and they also plan to expand their enterprise into the southern provinces of Laos.

Once the construction of the factory is complete it will create at least 800 jobs for local people, he added.

Mr Cheng said that company chose to establish the factory in Vientiane province because it has a sufficient supply of labour. By contrast, the number of workers in the city of Vientiane is constantly declining.

However, the company will have to pay more in the way of transport costs and they will assign technical staff to properly train all inexperienced workers before recruiting them to work in each position, he added.

According to the Hakers Enterprise business profile, the company engages in the development, production, and marketing of clothing and other textile-based products primarily in Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Laos.

The company offers sports and leisure apparel products. Hakers Enterprise Co., Ltd. was founded in 1986 and is based in Taipei, Taiwan.
