Restaurants increase as people's incomes grow
The number of restaurants in Laos meeting international standards and offering high quality cuisine is continuing to increase, in response to growing consumer demand.
With the continued economic growth and rising disposable incomes, more families are seeking high quality dining experiences which are comparable to those they can find in other countries of the region.
The increasing number of these restaurants is just one of the developments taking place in the country as part of Asean Economic Community preparedness.
In the last few months there have been many new restaurants opening in Vientiane that meet with international standards, such as the Makphet Restaurant at the Ban Inpeng Vat Chanh Tha and the Morgen Restaurant and Café at Ban Hai Sok , both in Chanthabouly district and the Niku O Yakiniki Restaurant in Ban Phonsaat, Xaysettha district.
The Morgen Restaurant and Café is an International Chain Restaurant, under the concept of a Home Made International Food and Fusion Art Café.
“ For the business management of this restaurant we focus on good service, reasonable price, cleanliness and safety,” Morgen restaurant and café owner, Ms Manivone Sitthixay told local media at the grand opening of the restaurant last week.
“The high standards of the restaurant will provide good quality and safe food for domestic and foreign consumers and it will be able to compete with others in the region when the AEC starts next year,” she said.
Anybody can enjoy the food served at this restaurant because the food pricing is low.
A restaurant is a small to medium enterprise which attracts the new young business people in Laos who find the flair and creativity of the business interesting.
Some of them have been able to grow their initial small restaurant business and take it to international standards gaining substantial experience along the way.
Makphet restaurant takes young people interested in food and the restaurant business and teaches them how to cook during their 18 month ‘apprenticeship' after which they return home to, hopefully, start up for themselv es.
In 2012, the total number of restaurants, from food stalls to five-star operations, was 1,590 which increased to 1,744 in 2013, according to the Tourism Development Department.
