Unique cakes make money for merchant

Cakes are a central part of any birthday or wedding celebration so cake shops present a good business opportunity but with many people opening bakeries and cake shops the competition is stiff these days.

However one cake shop owner named Ms Souvannaly is not worried about the stiff competition because she has set herself apart from the rest by creating her own unique style of special cakes.

Souvannaly Cake Shop is a well-known small business in Vientiane. It now has two branches, one in Phonpapao and the other in Saphanthong village, Sisattanak district; it is one of the first places people go when they want to buy a cake.

What sets it apart from the other cake shops are the decorative icings which feature all kinds of drawings and motifs, from well known cartoon characters to famous brands and people's favourite football teams. Their cakes are made to order and they can create pretty much anything people can think of, almost.

Ms Souvannaly said she first established the business back in 2002 while she was a government employee. She was an investor but didn't involve herself personally in the day to day running of the business. Instead, she agreed to let her relatives run it for the first few years, when it was a regular cake shop like most of the rest.

Then in 2007 Ms Souvannaly decided to resign from her job with the government and take over the management from her relatives, who wanted to open a shop of their own. It was at that point that Ms Souvannaly opted to make it into a fancy cake shop in order to take a step up from the competition.

She said it was around 2010 when her shop really started to make a name for itself. Ms Souvannaly la unched an advertising campaign, distributing flyers and leaflets displaying some of the cake designs available and it didn't take long before people came knocking on her door.

All of her cakes are handmade by her well-trained staff. They look beautiful, are different from other cakes, reasonably priced and of course, taste great as well. For so mething a little different on that special occasion you just can't go past Souvannaly Cake Shop, which offers more choices than just about anyone else.

Ms Souvannaly is satisfied with the success of her business so far but she still has plans to expand it further in the future. She says she plans to open more branches, increase her advertising and learn more about cooking cakes so that her decorative creations get even better in the years ahead.
