Sugarcane juice sellers cash in on hot weather

Sugarcane juice sales have become one of the good businesses in Vientiane as the weather is so hot in Laos and many people are looking for something cool and sweet to quench their thirst.

Along major streets in Vientiane, many sugarcane juice vendors can be seen selling high quantities, generating good income for vendors who know how to make money during this time of the year.

From early March, sugarcane growers outside of Vientiane have transported large amounts of their agricultural produce to sell in Vientiane at low prices due to the current large supply.

The cheaper supply of sugarcane creates possibilities for vendors to produce sugarcane for sale during the hot season in particular, when people crave something cool and refreshing.

Ms Meuy Latsamy, a sugar cane juice seller in Dondaeng village, Chanthabouly district, Vientiane, she said “during the dry season this year I think it will be very good for juice and water sellers, because this year will very hot”.

“I opened a sugarcane juice shop about three to four years ago, investing about four million kip for the juice machine,” she said.

Every day, Ms Meuy invests about 50,000 kip buying sugarcane. She buys the stalks for around 18,000 to 20,000 kip per bundle.

Meanwhile, their prices are very competitive, with one bag of sugarcane juice selling for 4,000 to 5,000 kip.

Depending on how many she sells, she can make 100,000 to 200,000 kip per day.

The afternoons and evenings are normally the busiest, with the majority of customers being young people.

Many sugarcane juice stalls are located near a number of Dondaeng primary schools and Souksavath College. The children range from five years old up to young adults.

When the weather is hot you can't go past sugarcane juice, Ms Meuy says, and it is full of natural sugars, unlike processed soft drinks.
