Cash crop prices rise during Pi Mai
The prices of edible goods have increased as vendors close during the Pi Mai (Lao New Year) celebrations.
According to Khuadin market, the prices of tomatoes rose from 3,000-5,000 kip per kg to 10,000 kip per kg, lemons rose from 10,000-12,000 kip per kg to 16,000 kip per kg, eggplant rose from 5,000-6,000 kip per kg to 8,000 kip per kg and cabbage also rose from 12,000 kip per 12kg to 30,000 kip.
A vendor at the market, Ms Saeng, told Vientiane Times yesterday, the cost of mint was still stable at 4,000-5,000 kip per kg, onion was 8,000 kip per kg and chilli was 6,000 kip per kg.
She said the price of tomato, melon and eggplant would return to normal after Pi Mai because vendors would open their shops again.
Vegetables and cash crop prices in the market this year are relatively cheaper than last year as the supply level is high.
However, the cost of vegetables and cash crops at markets such as Sivilay, Dongdok and Houay Hong are higher than Khuadin market.
Vendors who are buying the goods for cooking dishes such as noodles and laap (Lao minced meat salad) have to spend more for the products.
These products will rise when there is a high demand and low supply of the goods.
These food products are not yet under the control of the government because most Lao farmers are still producing these goods to be consumed within their family and to sell in the market.
Many markets are selling these products at different prices depending on the market supply and due to the necessity of making a profit, so vendors will increase the price of the product.
The price of pork in Khuadin market is still stable at around 40,000 kip per kg for grade A meat, 65,000 kip per kg for beef and 21,000 kip per kg for tilapia fish.
Pork prices in some other local markets are 42,000-43,000 kip per kg while beef and tilapia fish are 70,000 kip per kg and 22,000 kip per kg respectively.
