Investors hold off after stocks dip

After a sharp fall on Wednesday afternoon, investors yesterday were playing wait and see with the stock markets, explaining the low liquidity.

 

On the HCM City Stock Exchange, the VN-Index added 2.08 points, or 0.35 per cent, to end the day at 590.14. The market breadth was neutral on the southern bourse where 114 shares tumbled, 60 closed unchanged, and 13 were untraded.

The prices for large-cap stocks were up and down. They included Vingroup (VIC) and Bao Viet Holdings (BVH) with reductions of VND1,000 and VND100 per share respectively, while PetroVietnam Gas (GAS), Vinamilk (VNM) and Vietcombank (VCB) closed unchanged at the reference prices.

The VN30-Index, tracking the southern bourse's top shares in capitalisation and liquidity, gained 5.02 points, or 0.76 per cent, to end the day at 669.89. Market volume was down 40 per cent from a day earlier, totalling 151 million shares and fund certificates worth VND2,528 billion (US$119 million), down 40 per cent from yesterday.

Tan Tao Investment - Industry Corporation (ITA), remained the most active share with 16 million shares changing hands to finish at VND10,600 per share. FLC Group (FLC), came second with 12 million shares. They leapt 2.9 per cent to end at VND14,400 per share.Ocean Group (OGC) soared 3.8 per cent to settle at VND13,800 on a trade of 5.3 million shares.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index sank for the third day as sellers dominated the northern bourse. Traders still feared continued corrections at the back of huge gains.

The HNX-Index dropped 0.24 points, or 0.27 per cent, to close the day at 89.55. The northern bourse saw 96 shares rise, 146 tumble and 74 close unchanged.

The HNX 30 Index composed of the capital city's top shares also surged 0.47 points, or 0.26 per cent, to end at 183.97.

PetroVietnam Construction (PVX), was the most active share. A total of 12.4 million shares changed hands climbing 1.6 per cent to end at VND6,400 per share. Kim Long Securities (KLS) was second in liquidity with 6.4 million shares changing hands. They leapt 1.5 per cent to settle at VND14,000 per share.
