Lao woodcrafts see brisk trade at CAEXPO
Nanning, Guangxi province, China: This week's 10th China-Asean Expo, featuring products and services from countries in the region, has attracted hordes of shoppers from Chinese and Asean nations.
Many products and services are on display here after being brought to China by companies from Asean member countries and China's other trade partners.
Laos was allocated 80 booths at which the products of over 50 selected companies were on display. One of the exhibitors was the Khamthanaphone Wooden Arts Company Limited, which enjoyed positive feedback from buyers.
Speaking at the event, Company Director Mr Vilath Panyalath told Lao media representatives on Wednesday “We have a wide range of wooden handicrafts on sale and I'm pleased to report we are doing a brisk trade.”
While there were plenty of decorative wooden items on display from other Asean countries, it seemed the Lao booths were drawing the most interest each day.
Small pieces in particular, especially those depicting various kinds of animals, proved very attractive to both Chinese and overseas visitors.
“This year, we invested 4 million yuan (more than US$600,000) to carve 200 pieces but this still isn't enough to meet customer demand,” Mr Vilath said.
The company also attended the annual China-Asean Expo in 2010, but this year it is meeting with even greater success in terms of customer interest.
“We've been really struck with the amount of sales going on at the expo this year; it seems there are more exhibitors and visitors than in previous years,” Mr Vilath added.
One visitor to the booth, Ms Zhang, said she was interested in wooden handicrafts from Laos because they were unpainted.
“Today, I've bought a small wooden chair and a wooden pig which is nicely carved. I think these will look great in my apartment,” she said.
