PVOIL to build used cooking oil collection network for aviation fuel

Petrovietnam Oil Corporation (PVOIL) has partnered with Malaysia's FatHopes Energy to develop a nationwide network for collecting used cooking oil (UCO) to create feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other advanced biofuels.

The programme will initially be rolled out in HCM City before gradually expanding to other localities, PVOIL said.

UCO will be collected from restaurants, industrial kitchens, food and seafood processing facilities, households and other suitable sources.

UCO is among the feedstocks that can be used to produce SAF. Proper collection and treatment can return the waste oil to the production chain and contribute to the development of a circular economy.

Mai Trung Thành, director of PVOIL Trans, said the partnership reflects PVOIL's efforts to participate in the transition towards a circular and sustainable economy.

"By leveraging PVOIL's network together with FatHopes Energy's technology and international experience, we aim to build a modern and transparent collection system that delivers environmental value while helping create feedstock for the development of SAF in Việt Nam," Thành said.

As demand for SAF increases as airlines step up efforts to cut emissions, developing traceable feedstock supplies could give Việt Nam an opportunity to participate more deeply in the region's sustainable fuel supply chains.

The partnership is expected to contribute to building the infrastructure needed to support Việt Nam's energy transition, FatHopes Energy CEO Vinesh Sinha said.

PVOIL has about 1,050 petrol stations, along with storage, transportation and logistics facilities across Việt Nam.

FatHopes Energy specialises in collecting waste-derived feedstocks and developing supply chains for sustainable fuels. The Malaysian company will provide technology, operational expertise and collection models it has implemented in Southeast Asia.

Its digital platform Waste Recycling Management System can track UCO from its point of origin through collection and aggregation before it enters the feedstock supply chain.
