Cambodia and Russia eye deeper economic ties

Phnom Penh and Moscow agree to boost their ties by expanding cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, agriculture and energy.

Cambodia and Russia have agreed to expand their bilateral ties and elevate cooperation across key sectors, including trade, investment, tourism, agriculture, energy, and cultural exchanges.

The commitments were highlighted during a meeting between Prime Minister Hun Manet and Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrey Rudenko at the Peace Palace on Monday.

Rudenko recalled the deep bilateral relationship and reaffirmed Russia’s historical contributions to Cambodia’s reconstruction and socio-economic progress.

In response, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his gratitude for Russia’s important contributions to Cambodia’s socio-economic development and its continued educational support through student scholarships.

Earlier in the day, Rudenko co-chaired the Third Session of Cambodia-Russia Bilateral Political Consultations alongside Cambodian Foreign Ministry Secretary of State Meas Kim Heng.

The premier commended the fruitful outcomes of the third session of bilateral political consultations, emphasising the importance of expanding future cooperation.

Rudenko assured Mr Hun Manet that ministry-level consultations will continue to serve as a cornerstone for advancing bilateral relations between the two countries.

Additionally, he appreciated the relations and cooperation between the two countries, citing Cambodia as Russia’s long-term and reliable cooperation partner in the Asia-Pacific region. He expressed firm belief that Russia-Cambodia relations will continue to grow, and the two countries need to strengthen cooperation in many potential areas to deepen the bilateral ties.

In a separate meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and MFAIC Minister Prak Sokhonn, the two sides discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in priority areas, including politics, trade and investment, and people-to-people exchanges.

Sokhonn also recalled the previous meetings held in Russia’s Kazan city between the two countries’ top leaders in June, and his recent meeting with the Russian Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut in June and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Manila in July.

He expressed satisfaction with the long-standing relationship and the growing cooperation over the past 70 years, especially the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Russia this year.
