Singapore, Hong Kong firms mull investment in Cambodia
The firms evince interest in exploring investment opportunities in the health and education sectors.
A delegation from YHS (Cambodia) Food & Beverage (Yeo’s), a Singapore-based company, and Hong Kong’s Sino Group Tuesday held talks with high-level officials of the Royal Government to explore investment opportunities in the health and education sectors.
Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice-Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), received a courtesy visit from the Yeo’s and Sino Group delegation, led by Na Wu Beng, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Yeo Hiap Seng Limited (YHS), in Phnom Penh.
The meeting, attended by Hangchuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS), and Chheang Ra, Minister of Health, focused on establishing mobile clinics and providing nutritional assistance to schoolchildren in several provinces as part of Yeo’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
According to Chanthol, the initiative followed a proposal he raised during a meeting with Robert Ng, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sino Group, in Hong Kong, China, on September 11.
Addressing the meeting, Chanthol expressed satisfaction with Robert’s decision and swift action to explore the feasibility of mobile clinics delivering innovative health services and advanced medical technology to people in remote and underserved areas across the Kingdom.
He also welcomed Yeo’s plan to provide nutritional support to schoolchildren, highlighting its potential role in combating malnutrition, improving learning outcomes and fostering long-term human capital development, which is crucial for Cambodia’s socio-economic progress and inclusive growth.
Chanthol reaffirmed that the Royal Government stands ready to facilitate coordination and cooperation throughout the feasibility study and subsequent projects stages, ensuring smooth implementation, sustainability and measurable impact on citizens’ well-being and educational development.
“Access to quality healthcare, adequate nutrition according to age, and education are essential drivers of Cambodia’s human capital development and overall socio-economic progress,” he said.
Naron highlighted MoEYS ongoing initiatives, including scholarships for disadvantaged students and school feeding programs using local agricultural products to improve nutrition, academic performance, and overall well-being of students in vulnerable areas.
He stressed that these programmes not only meet immediate needs but also contribute to Cambodia’s long-term development by nurturing healthier, better-educated human capital, which is essential for driving sustainable economic growth and social advancement across the country.
On behalf of MoEYS, Naron expressed deep appreciation for Yeo’s and Sino Group’s past contributions to the education sector while reaffirming the Royal Government’s full support, underlining the importance of coordination, timely implementation and long-term cooperation for maximum impact.
In a related development, MoEYS and Yeo’s signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on implementing the ‘Campaign to Promote Food Safety in Educational Institutions’ in June, aimed at raising awareness among primary and secondary students about consuming low-sugar beverages and promoting healthier dietary habits.
The Health Minister also voiced support for the mobile clinic and nutrition projects, pledging active participation in coordinating and facilitating the initiatives to ensure smooth execution and tangible benefits for students, citizens and communities in need.
