Cambodia casinos’ gross gaming revenue yet to reach pre-pandemic levels
While the casinos in other countries across the Asia-Pacific region have witnessed their gross gaming revenue (GGR) reaching pre-pandemic levels, Cambodia is lagging behind and will not be able to cross the milestone in the near term, an analysis by S&P Global Ratings reveals.
The leading provider of independent credit ratings attributes this trend to the elimination of junkets in the Kingdom’s casino sector.
“In markets such as Cambodia, the GGR recovery will take longer,” it said.
Khmer Times recently reported that the Commercial Gambling Management Commission of Cambodia (CGMC), responsible for overseeing the licensing and regulatory enforcement across commercial gambling centres, has established 13 onsite offices within the licensed casinos to maintain a strict regulatory framework in the sector.
According to the CGMC, the country has granted operating licenses to 195 casinos, but 15 of the licenses have expired, one has been revoked, and one has been suspended.
Cambodia earned tax revenue of $63.1 million from casinos and game of chance operators in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 85 percent, the latest data released by CGMC reveals.
