Cambodia-Thailand border trade tops $480M in April
Border trade volume between Cambodia and Thailand reached $480 million in April 2025, an increase of 16.5 percent on a year-on-year basis, according to the latest data revealed by the Thai Department of Foreign Trade.
Thai exports to Cambodia through the border checkpoints stood at $372 million, up 11.1 percent, while Cambodian goods to the neighbouring country were valued at $98 million, an increase of 43.1 percent.
The Kingdom received goods worth $220 million through the Poipet checkpoint in Banteay Meanchey province and connected to Aranyaprathet checkpoint of Thailand. Cambodia exported $84 million worth goods through this route.
Chanthaburi district of Thailand, which has two checkpoints with Cambodia – Daung in Battambang province and Phsar Prum in Pailin province – witnessed the flow of goods worth $85 million across the border. Around $76 million worth goods in Thai exports to Cambodia and $9 million worth goods in Cambodian exports to Thailand constituted the trade volume through these checkpoints.
Similarly, Cham Yeam City of Koh Kong province, which maintains a border checkpoint with Khlong Yai city of Thailand, had a trade volume of over $75 million ($67 million worth goods in Thai exports and $8.2 million worth goods in Cambodian exports).
Cambodia experienced a surplus in trade on the border route between O’Smach checkpoint in Oddar Meanchey province and Chong Chom town of Thailand. The Kingdom’s exports, through this route stood at $9.46 million while the imports from Thailand was only $6.7 million.
Key exports from Cambodia to Thailand include vegetables, vegetable-based products, aluminium scraps, and insulated cables while major imports included beverages, minerals, fuels, and flavoured mineral water.
Trade between Cambodia and Thailand reached $1.49 billion during the first four months of the year, marking a 6.4 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to a recent report by Cambodia’s General Department of Customs and Excise.
From January to April, Cambodia’s exports to Thailand totalled $327.78 million, representing a 2.9 percent decline from $337.59 million in the same period of the previous year.
Conversely, Cambodian imports from Thailand rose by 9.4 percent to $1.16 billion, up from $1.06 billion.
Last month, Cambodia and Thailand reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic ties, setting an ambitious bilateral trade target of $15 billion by 2027.
During a meeting between Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Thai Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa in Kuala Lumpur last month, both nations agreed to cooperate in a myriad of economic spheres including tourism, agriculture, and the establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) along the borders.
Former Prime Minister and Senate President Hun Sen on Sunday said that “if imported goods are no longer entering Cambodia, the Thai people should resolve this matter directly with their government, because it is the Thai people themselves who will suffer the most”.
“As for Cambodian citizens, in the absence of Thai products, please do not blame the Royal Government of Cambodia, as this shortage is a direct result of Thailand’s decision to close the border.”
