Ecolean earns fifth platinum EcoVadis medal for sustainability

Ecolean's ongoing commitment to sustainability and the consistent high performance in EcoVadis assessments underscore the company's role as a leader in the packaging industry.

For the fifth consecutive year, Ecolean, a company specialising in lightweight packaging solutions for liquid food, has been awarded the Platinum medal by EcoVadis. This recognition places Ecolean among the top 1 per cent of over 130,000 companies evaluated worldwide, highlighting its consistent commitment to sustainability.

With an innovative lightweight packaging solution that promotes resource efficiency, Ecolean, a global packaging company with its headquarters in Sweden, is helping the world to use fewer resources. Ecolean packaging not only uses less material and energy, but it also helps to minimise food waste and ensure food safety. In short, the lightweight packaging solution ensures more food with fewer resources.

EcoVadis is a top provider of business sustainability ratings, assessing companies based on their policies, actions, and outcomes in several critical areas: Environment, Labour and Human Rights and Ethics’ Sustainable Procurement.

Achieving the Platinum medal is a significant accomplishment, reserved for the top 1 per cent of companies assessed. Ecolean scored 82 out of 100, maintaining the same high score for the past two years.

"It’s truly fantastic – this achievement makes me both happy and immensely proud of all our amazing colleagues who have contributed to this work. This recognition reflects the strong efforts of our entire organisation across the areas of Environment, Labour & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement throughout 2024,” said Maria Ahlström, chief sustainability officer at Ecolean.

This year's EcoVadis assessment introduced new parameters in each category and added a new section on Sustainable Procurement. Despite these increased requirements, Ecolean retained top score, demonstrating the ability to adapt and excel in sustainability practices. The company has initiated several projects and activities to strengthen their sustainability work.

"Ecolean has shown exceptional competence and transparency in meeting these new, more stringent requirements. Our initiatives, such as the CSRD work, Group Procurement process development, global sustainability training, Ecolean Academy, and GHG workshops, have significantly strengthened our sustainability efforts and transparency," Maria Ahlström added.

Ecolean remains committed to its sustainability journey, with a strong emphasis on measurable goals, transparency, and ESG.

Since Ecolean was founded in 1996 with our lightweight philosophy, we have challenged the food packaging industry and saved resources along the way. Today, Ecolean is a rapidly growing packaging innovator that provides lightweight food packaging to more than 30 countries. China, Pakistan and Vietnam are the company’s largest markets and production facilities are seated in Sweden, China and Pakistan.

"Our focus on innovation, transparency, and ESG will continue to drive our sustainability efforts. We believe it is our collective responsibility to integrate sustainability into every aspect of our business, striving for continuous improvement to make a meaningful impact on our planet and society," Ahlström said.

Furthermore, Ecolean’s Sustainability Roadmap 2030 is a cornerstone of the company’s commitment to becoming a more sustainable business. The roadmap includes ambitious targets to not only minimise environmental negative impacts, but to also optimise the positive benefits of light-weight packaging on society.

Ecolean is the only packaging supplier with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for the entire packaging system, including both packages, filling machines and production plants. EPDs provide the ability to measure and compare different packaging solutions – and to ultimately optimise life cycle sustainability.
