BESS Task Force to accelerate Vietnam’s clean energy transition

The Electricity Authority of Vietnam, in collaboration with the Vietnam Energy Partnership Group (VEPG) and supported by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), officially launched the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Task Force on April 9 in Hanoi.

BESS Task Force to accelerate Vietnam’s clean energy transition

The inaugural technical meeting marked a critical milestone in providing advisory support for Vietnam's efforts to integrate renewable energy and strengthen grid resilience in alignment with the national Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8).

As critical infrastructure for Vietnam's evolving power system, Battery Energy Storage Systems deliver multiple strategic benefits, including renewable energy integration, enhanced grid stability, frequency regulation, and peak shaving capabilities.

Vietnam's clean energy ambitions have grown significantly in the updated draft PDP8 revision, which now proposes between 10,000 and 16,300 MW of battery storage capacity by 2030–a transformative investment in the country's energy security and sustainability.

"This task force demonstrates GEAPP's firm commitment to supporting Vietnam's government in its energy transition," said Kitty Bu, vice president for Southeast Asia at GEAPP. "By uniting key stakeholders, we are providing technical expertise to help Vietnam achieve its renewable energy goals and strengthen grid stability. Our alliance stands ready to support Vietnam's leadership in building a resilient, sustainable energy future."

Operating under VEPG's Technical Working Group 3 (TWG3) on Grid Integration and Grid Infrastructure, this specialised working group brings together diverse representatives from government agencies, the national utility, research institutions, international development partners, and embassies. Facilitated by GEAPP, this collaborative platform aims to provide technical support and advisory services while addressing barriers to battery storage deployment in alignment with Vietnam's energy priorities.

The inaugural meeting in Hanoi convened stakeholders to share insights and align on priorities for supporting battery storage deployment. Throughout the session, participants discussed opportunities and challenges related to policy frameworks, technical standards, and investment readiness–reinforcing a shared commitment to advancing BESS as a key enabler of Vietnam's clean energy transition.

Advisory support will focus on several key strategic areas critical to facilitating large-scale energy storage deployment, including: policy and regulatory frameworks, financial mechanisms, market integration, technical standards, business models, capacity building, and alignment with national energy goals.

In the coming months, a series of technical studies and knowledge resources will be developed, covering international best practices, technical capabilities, pricing mechanisms, ownership structures, financing approaches, and technical standards–all tailored to Vietnam's specific context.

Through its collaborative, cross-sectoral approach, this advisory platform aims to become a valuable resource for Vietnam's energy sector, helping to provide technical expertise for a clean, reliable, and affordable power system. Working together, stakeholders will advance towards the realisation of PDP8 targets while reinforcing Vietnam's leadership in energy innovation and transition.
