'Bánh mì': Vietnam’s culinary legacy that makes waves globally

The vibrant success of the third Vietnam Bánh Mì Festival, held in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, marked an exciting milestone in the global journey of bánh mì, Vietnam’s iconic sandwich, further solidifying the position of the dish in the international culinary landscape.

The fest started opening to the public at Le Van Tam Park in District 1 on Friday morning last week, and runs until Monday, featuring over 140 booths from bánh mì producers and vendors.

The festival drew crowds from all corners of the globe.

A month before the event, Nguyen Thi Khanh, president of the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association, told a press briefing that several international businesses were already planning to attend the fest, including partners from the United States interested in bringing Vietnamese bánh mì to America.

If successful, a bánh mì festival may soon be held in the U.S. in September, she said.

Throughout the festival's three days, from early morning until late at night, its grounds were constantly alive with energy.

Throngs of local and international visitors happily stood in line for a bite of bánh mì, amidst a sea of other international sandwiches like baguettes, burgers, and sandwiches.

The presence of so many foreign tourists at the event underscored the global appeal of this simple yet flavorful dish.

Over the past five decades, bánh mì has become more than just a meal, it is a cultural symbol shared by the Vietnamese people with the world.

The crispy bread crust, the fatty butter sauce, the savory meat, the crunchy pickled vegetables, and the spicy chilies create a harmonious balance of flavors that reflect the essence of Vietnamese cuisine.

The popularity of Vietnamese bánh mì has now spread to countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, South Korea, Singapore, and Japan, making it a global culinary ambassador for Vietnam.

In 2024, Vietnamese bánh mì was ranked first on the prestigious Taste Atlas list of the 100 best sandwiches in the world, cementing its international acclaim.

Such festivals have played a key role in bringing bánh mì closer to international friends and establishing it as a must-try dish for food lovers everywhere.

However, as Vietnamese bánh mì continues to gain popularity on the world stage, there are still numerous challenges and opportunities ahead.

To ensure the lasting success of bánh mì in the global culinary arena, several strategies must be considered.

First, as globalization and integration reshape the modern world, research and innovation in the development of bánh mì are essential.

This could mean modernizing the dish to appeal to contemporary tastes while preserving its authentic flavors and traditions.

Moreover, more efforts should be made to introduce bánh mì to overseas Vietnamese communities and international tourists through food tourism programs and international media channels.

In addition, Vietnamese bánh mì producers and businesses should also increase their promotional activities, making bánh mì more accessible by offering it in global retail chains like Walmart and Costco in the U.S. or Carrefour in France.

Opening bánh mì stores in international shopping malls and launching creative marketing campaigns would help attract tourists and food enthusiasts alike.

Furthermore, it is crucial to establish standardized production steps, ensuring food safety and quality from sourcing ingredients to packaging, to help bánh mì stand proudly alongside other premium global dishes when served in high-end restaurants and prestigious food venues.

Also, bánh mì brands should focus on technological innovations in production, experimenting with new methods and diversifying ingredients to cater to different tastes worldwide, while retaining the essence of Vietnamese flavor.

Only when these strategies are successfully implemented will bánh mì have the opportunity to reach new heights on the world stage, satisfying the cravings of global consumers and contributing to the development of Vietnam's tourism industry.
