Aquaculture fair to boost awareness of farmed fish quality
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) will organise the first ‘Cambodia Aquaculture Exhibition’ this weekend at the Sunshine Night Market in Phnom Penh, to raise public awareness about the quality of farmed fish.
Im Rachna, a spokeswoman for Ministry of Agriculture, said yesterday that the ministry initiated the aquaculture exhibition to increase public awareness about the quality of farmed fish and to highlight the progress and development of the aquaculture sector in the country.
The general public was reluctant to eat farmed fish due to concerns that they were not raised in compliance with proper quality standards and hygiene practices, potentially posing risks to eaters’ health.
“Through the efforts of the Fisheries Administration, in collaboration with aquaculture farmers, associations, feed supply companies, and processing enterprises, our aquaculture sector has achieved remarkable progress to date and there are many positive indications that the ministry must showcase to the public to know and understand that Cambodia’s farmed fish is high quality, hygienic, and safe for eating,” Rachna added.
“The first Cambodian Aquaculture Exhibition,” Rachana said, “will provide the general public an opportunity to learn the entire aquaculture chain including fish species selection, raising and feeding practices, as well as the new techniques and technologies being used in aquaculture in Cambodia.
This increased understanding will build public confidence in the quality and safety of Cambodia’s farmed fish, reassuring them that it is safe for consumption, she said.
“The Ministry of Agriculture pays high attention to aquaculture sector by striving to improve fish farming quality and expand its scale. These efforts aim to ensure food safety for consumers, stabilise market prices, and promote the sustainability of natural fish populations,” she stressed.
Addressing the ‘19th National Fisheries Day’ in July in Kampong Cham province, Prime Minister Hun Manet has called for processing aquaculture to ensure the needs of the people and exporting.
“Encourage the promotion of aquaculture in all forms, both freshwater and marine, by promoting research on breeding techniques, endangered species conservation, and highly economically viable offspring to enhance aqua culturist livelihood and reduce pressure on natural fisheries resources,” he said.
According to Ministry of Agriculture, in 2023 both the Fisheries Administration and aquaculture have hatched more than 269 million species of local fish to be released into the natural, contributing to farmers and doing business locally.
