Cambodia, China commit to restore tourist numbers to pre-Covid levels
Cambodia and China Tuesday committed to restoring the Chinese visitor arrivals to pre-pandemic levels and strengthening bilateral ties in tourism development. Both sides emphasized the importance of increasing direct flights and enhancing tourism infrastructure.
Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC), and Wang Wenbin, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Cambodia, expressed satisfaction with the multifaceted and longstanding bilateral relationship between the two countries.
According to a press release issued by the MFAIC on Wednesday, Sokhonn and Ambassador Wang reaffirmed their commitment to successfully implement the consensus and agreements made by the leaders of both nations. They pledged to advance key projects such as the Fish and Rice Corridor, the Industrial Development Corridor, the Modern Agricultural Development Project, and the mixed energy project.
Additionally, they emphasised promoting the establishment of a high-quality, high-level, and high-standard Cambodia-China Community with a shared future in the new era, serving as a model for mankind.
“Deputy Prime Minister and Chinese Ambassador expressed enthusiasm for the initiative to designate 2025 as the ‘Cambodia-China Tourism Year.’ They discussed the importance of increasing direct flights and improving tourism infrastructure to restore pre-pandemic visitor numbers of Chinese national arrivals,” the release noted.
Sokhonn and Ambassador Wang also discussed preparations for the upcoming official visit to China by Hun Sen, President of the Senate and President the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP).
Earlier, Minister of Tourism Huot Hak said, “As the Minister of Tourism, representing the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC), I assure you that we will do everything possible to showcase Cambodia’s tourism potential to the world, particularly China. I warmly invite more Chinese tourists to visit and experience the beauty and culture of Cambodia.”
Speaking at the Cambodia-China Sister Cities Conference in Siem Reap province earlier this month, Hak said that Cambodia is expected to receive 7 million international tourists in 2025, including over 2 million Chinese visitors.
He also highlighted the nation’s rich cultural heritage, exemplified by Angkor Wat, and its stunning coastlines in provinces such as Kampot, Kep, Sihanoukville, and Koh Kong. Northern regions offer additional natural attractions, including charming waterfalls and beautiful landscapes, providing a diverse and enchanting experience for visitors.
