Work on turning coastal areas into economic poles progressing
The National Committee for Coastal Management and Development (NCCDC) is spearheading a transformative initiative to develop Cambodia’s four coastal zones into thriving economic poles, said a senior official of the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction.
This ambitious project aims to balance sustainable development and well-being of coastal communities, prioritizing livelihoods, health, and happiness, Pen Sophal, the ministry’s Secretary of State said at its annual meeting to review works in 2024 and set objectives for 2025, on Tuesday.
Currently, various action plans are being implemented to transform these coastal areas into modern national economic poles with sustainable livelihoods, health, and happiness, even while converting them as world-class tourism destinations, he said.
“The development of the coastal areas will contribute to transforming Cambodia into an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050,” Sophal said.
The National Committee has promoted the management, organization, improvement and development of important Cambodian coastal zones, he said, adding that the committee also prepared policies, laws, and legal documents on the management and development of Cambodia’s coastal areas.
Under the draft plan, NCCDC will develop a public beach resort, ‘Techo Santephap Kep Beach’ and tourism cycling path projects in the Cambodian coastal areas of Kampot, Kep, Preah Sihanouk and Koh Kong provinces. Additionally, NCCDC will establish tourist ports and infrastructure improvement and development projects in the coastal areas in the four provinces.
A draft law has completed extensive consultations and continued reviews in accordance with procedures, he said.
Cambodia has four coastal provinces – Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong, Kampot and Kep.
The country’s coastal provinces are rapidly emerging as a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists.
With pristine beaches, stunning islands, and vibrant coastal cities, these provinces offer a diverse range of experiences for travellers of all ages.
With tourism infrastructure development, these coastal provinces are poised to become even more popular destinations in the years to come.
