Cambodia exported over three tons of live mantis shrimp to China, says MAFF

Cambodia exported more than three tons of live mantis shrimp to China, said a senior official for Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) yesterday.

 

Confirming this to Khmer Times yesterday, Im Rachna, a spokeswoman for MAFF, said that Cambodia has started sending live shrimp to China in September 2023 with only 45 kilograms as trail.

“Since we started exporting live mantis shrimp in September, November and December 2023 and in January and February 2024, we sent more than three tons to only China,” said Rachna.

According to a report released by the Ministry of Agriculture, there were 1,095 kilograms of live mantis shrimp that were exported to China in 2023 and over 2,100 kilograms were exported in the first two months of 2024.

Rachna said that in the recent months, due to the hot weather export of live mantis shrimp were less, but it will be increase during the cold weather.

“Agriculture Ministry and the company are working closely to export more live mantis shrimp to China as there a high demand,” said Ministry’s spokeswoman, adding that today China is the biggest market for shrimp.

Chea Kimlong, adviser to Cambodian Tienit International Trading, which exported mantis shrimp to China could not be reached for comment yesterday.
